World War II Cemetery in Guwahati? How is that possible?
Well, it does exist. While Guwahati itself did not see any action, the war raged in the northeastern frontiers of India. The battle of Kohima and Imphal are well-known as the Japanese forces managed to reach till that point, along with the Azad Hind Fauj. The allied forces were stationed all over the region and a lot of those stories still remain untold.
As Guwahati was a major town, a lot of wounded people ended up in the hospitals here and the casualties eventually got buried here. After the war, many scattered graves in smaller places were also transferred here and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission took over the operations.
Now, it is located in a very densely populated locality of Silpukhuri. However, it is not far from some other important attractions of old Guwahati.
There are now 486 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated here with 25 unidentified burials. It also contains 24 Chinese war graves, as well as two non-war graves.
